In my last post about the Zoom H4n vs Edirol I outlined some of the basic reasons why the Zoom H4n is superior to the Edirol.
Lets look at a few more “this recorder vs. that recorder” that I have been getting questions about:
Tascam DP-008 vs Zoom H4n
First off, these two portable digital recorders aren’t really in the same ball park. The DP-008 is a desktop unit with 8 track capabilities (true 8 track capabilities!) with a larger number of inputs. In all honesty if you are looking to do some serious in-house recording the DP-008 has a very nice microphone built in and is far more flexible for multi-tracking. But keep in mind that it lacks the portability of the Zoom H4n.

Sony PCM-D50 vs. Olympus LS 11
This is a bit more of a competition. Both units have excellent build quality and high quality recording capabilities. The Sony PCM-D50 is larger so keep this in mind if compact recording is important to you. The Sony offers more memory than the Olympus LS 11 and in my opinion a better sound, however the LS-10 is at least $100 cheaper than the PCM-D50 and comes with better accessories including wind screen, case and strap. All very nice things if you are going to be on the move.
Zoom H4n vs. Olympus LS-10
Again tough competition, but in my opinion the Zoom H4n is the clear winner of this one. Price of the two units is very comparable. The Zoom H4n out does the LS-10 in accessories, expandable memory, nicer screen, better sound and more features overall. For the price the Zoom H4n is the winner, hands down.
Zoom H4n vs. Zoom Q3
Without comparing apples to apples it’s hard to get an honest comparison. The Zoom H4n sounds better hands down, and has a lot of features that the Q3 doesn’t have… except for one VIDEO. The Q3 can save you a lot of time syncing up your audio and video recordings and does a decent job. Personally I haven’t been incredibly impressed with the video quality of the Q3 however so take a look around on youtube and judge for yourself.
Remember when you are comparing recorders, try and stay within the same price bracket and look at features for price, obviously if you spend an extra 200 dollars or more than you will end up with a better recorder.
I’ll be answering more questions about different recorders in my next few posts.
Cheers and Happy Recording!
