Sony ICD-SX712 Digital Flash Voice Recorder vs Zoom H1 Digital Recorder Review

So this week I thought I would take a look at two very comparable recorders and see if I could decide on an absolute winner…

The Sony ICD-SX712 Digital Flash Voice Recorder is a relatively new offering from Sony that looks very promising and is getting some very good reviews – and of course the Zoom H1 has been around for awhile and carries Zoom’s excellent reputation when it comes to digital recorders that just work.

Wow! So for the most part these are very comparable recorders with similar price points however the Zoom H1 is obviously a little cheaper. Sony is a great name in electronics and they’re probably betting on the fact that some people will be willing to pay a little more (that’s what they seem to do for most of their products).

When it comes to user reviews both recorders are fairly equal as well. While it is true that the Sony doesn’t have near the reviews on Amazon that the Zoom H1 has – everything that it’s received has been very positive and both units have around a 4 star rating on Amazon.

Upon closer inspection each offer a few different things that may appeal to different people.

For example the Sony ICD-SX712 offers things like a calendar/planner (not sure why you would want this on a digital recorder but I suppose if you are using it for memos it might be useful).

The H1 however offers a TRIPOD MOUNT! I can’t say for sure that the Sony doesn’t but I can’t find it listed in any of the specs. Trust me when I say that a tripod mount is a great thing to have and even if you don’t think you’ll use it – you will at some point!

The Conclusion

It’s pretty hard to decide on an absolute winner here. The Zoom H1 is definitely cheaper and is probably more geared for recording music/interviews/audio for video while the Sony looks to be more adept at taking memos and is more business oriented.

Both recorders are very well reviewed on places like Amazon and Consumer Reports so depending on your personal needs and brand preferences I would say check each out a little more thoroughly and make the decision. Both are great recorders and would make a good purchase.
