The Reviews

We looked at over 30 consumer reviews from various consumer reports websites and it’s pretty obvious that people are very happy with the Olympus VN-8100PC Digital Voice Recorder. Out of 30 reviews on amazon there was only 1 2 star rating and 1 3 star rating, the rest are 4 and 5 stars, this is usually a good indicator of a products quality.

So what dont people like about the Olympus VN-8100PC?

There are certainly some complaints about the unit which include things like a terrible manual. Unfortunately Olympus and many other digital recorder manufacturers are terrible at producing legible manuals! The good news is, this thing is simple to use and you won’t really need the manual anyways but one reviewer pointed out that you’re going to have to be prepared to substitute a verb or two when deciphering the manual!

Aside from that however, people are VERY happy with the sound of this recorder as well as things like the battery life, the fact that it comes with a case and it’s ease of use.

One thing you should know about digital recorders in this price range is that you will get some hiss in the recordings, these are not professional recording devices and are designed to capture sound for archival purposes, not for super quality playback.

With this in mind however, we were surprised to find that many reviewers commented on how well the hiss reduction filter on this unit works. While many other units have a hiss reduction feature, they normally don’t do very much in terms of reducing background noise and generally degrade the quality. This doesn’t seem to be the case with the Olympus VN-8100PC with one reviewer stating that he chose it over a similar model from Sony because the hiss reduction works so well.

This recorder is perfect for capturing lectures, interviews and basically any voice. It would also be a great practice tool for musicians looking to capture phrasing etc… however don’t expect to make high-quality demos with a unit like this, it simply doesn’t have the quality (check out the Zoom H4n if you want to make high-quality demos!).
